Govandi to host EduFest from January 19-21
Govandi, which has one of the lowest Human Development Index, would hold a three-day EduFest to instill the importance of education among locals. The event, to be held from January 19-21 at seven venues in Govandi, is the brainchild of Samajwadi Party corporator Raees Shaikh.
“Most schools in Govandi are located in dank, space-starved buildings. The concept of normal school activity and competitions are absent in these schools. The idea behind starting this fest is to make students understand the idea of competitiveness,” Shaikh said.
According to a Tata Institute of Social Sciences report, the areas of Govandi, Deonar, Shivaji Nagar and Mankhurd have some of the lowest Human Development Index in Mumbai. Around 77.5 per cent of Govandi’s residents live in slums and nearly 30-40 per cent of the school-going children are the first generation of the family to be inside a school.
The EduFest would have separate competitions for pre-primary, primary, middle, secondary and higher secondary levels. For each group, there would be several competitions to choose from, including quiz, essay writing, elocution, painting, mono-acting, folk dance, story-telling, fancy dress, and some specific programmes for women.
Over 100 schools in the locality are expected to participate in the event. The function would also have modules called ‘Govandi has got talent’, where students would be given a stage to showcase their skills and talent.
