Rahul Gandhi Resolute in His Support to JNU Students

Jawaharlal Nehru University students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, who are facing charges of sedition, surrendered before the Delhi Police late on Tuesday night after the Delhi High Court directed them to give themselves in earlier in the day.
The two left the campus in a university vehicle escorted by guards around 11:45 p.m. and were take into custody by a police team waiting outside one of the exit gates of the varsity.
Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Deepak Mishra confirmed the arrest.

In the morning, Umar and Anirban moved the High Court seeking protection in order to surrender but the court, while directing the students to surrender, adjourned the hearing for protection till Wednesday.
Refusing to grant interim protection against arrest for a day, the Delhi High Court asked Umar and Anirban to inform it about the date, time and place where they wish to surrender.
The five students — Ashutosh Kumar, Anant Prakash, Rama Naga, besides Umar and Anirban – are wanted by the police in a sedition case.

Ashutosh, a former JNUSU president, said: “We have always maintained that we are not going to go anywhere in the campus. We are in the campus, if the police want they can call us for joining the probe. However, none of us have heard from them so far.”

Prime Minister Modi says the controversy is being used to ‘distract’ the government

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday exhorted his party and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) constituents to remain united and aggressive in the face of the Opposition’s attack on the government’s handling of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) issue, terming it an attempt to “distract” the government.
On the first day of the Budget session of Parliament, Mr. Modi met with his party’s parliamentary executive and NDA leaders as the Rajya Sabha is scheduled to take up the JNU issue and the death of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula on Wednesday.
Top sources who were present at the meeting said Mr. Modi praised the work of his own government, and said the JNU issue was being used as a “distraction” by the Opposition to attack it.

“He also made comments on the common cause being made by the Congress and the Left on this issue, terming Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi as being politically unwise in the matter,” said a senior Minister present at the meeting.
“Prime Minister Modi said the Left was interested in keeping the issue alive as it had to face elections in West Bengal and Kerala, where it has a stake, but that the Congress had nothing to gain from it,” said the source.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley also spoke at the meeting briefing the senior leaders of the alliance on the issue. He gave details of the JNU incident of February 9 and the controversy surrounding it.
Meenakshi Lekhi, MP, has moved a notice in the Lok Sabha to discuss the issue.

Continued uproar over Dalit student's suicide issue forces two adjournments after lunch in the Rajya Sabha till 3.45 pm.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) members on Wednesday forced two adjournments of the Rajya Sabha, creating an uproar over the suicide of Dalit student Rohith Vemula and demanding the resignation of Union Ministers alleging they were linked with the incident.
Raising the issue, party chief Mayawati said the death of Vemula was a matter of grave concern.
“Since the time the BJP came to power at the Centre, nefarious means are being used to impose RSS ideology,” she said adding that prestigious institutions like Hyderabad University, Aligarh Muslim University, Jamia Milia and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) were being interfered with.
She insisted that the government respond to her demands before the listed discussion is taken up.
