Mumbai Rains LIVE: Weather Better Today, Local Trains Running Slow In Some Areas





MUMBAI:  Heavy rains coupled with thunder and lightning affected weather in most parts of Mumbai since last evening. Schools and colleges have been shut as precaution and flights towards and from the financial capital are hit. The downpour is likely to continue for the next 24 hours, the weather department predicted. Several parts of the city including South Mumbai, Kandivili, Borivali, Andheri and Bhandup, received heavy rainfall. The traffic in Mumbai has slowed down and the local train are hit too. This is the second time in two months that Mumbai is hit with heavy rains.

The BMC said water logging was reported at several places, including Hindmata, Sion, Veera Desai Road, Air India Colony, Milan Subway, Andheri Subway, Bandra, Dahisar, Chembur and Mankhurd.

Pumping machines have been pressed into services in these areas, the corporation said.

Incidents of tree and branches falling were reported in 168 places. Besides, there were 21 short-circuits and five cases of wall collapse.

Don't "spread and trust" rumours of cyclone warning: BMC to MumbaikarsHeavy rains since last night continued today, throwing normal life out of gear in the city and its suburbs, and affecting road and suburban rail services.

As rains threatened to paralyse the city, panic messages on a cyclone today went viral on social media and messaging apps.
The BMC's Disaster Management cell tweeted clarifying that no such warning has been issued by the weather department.

Although Mumbai is trying to build itself into a global financial hub, parts of the city still struggle to cope with annual monsoon rains.

Unabated construction on floodplains and coastal areas, as well as storm-water drains and waterways clogged by plastic garbage have made the city increasingly vulnerable to storms.

A deluge in Mumbai last month killed 14 people, wrecked homes and caused chaos in the city of 20 million people.

Floods in 2005 killed more than 500 people in the city. The majority of deaths occurred in shanty town slums, which are home to more than half of Mumbai's population.
